Small. That’s one of the reasons for the success of Brookside Foods. Founded in 1954 in Abbotsford, B.C., Brookside Foods manufactures and distributes mouth-wateringly good confections. They use their size to capitalize on a big product benefit – freshness. Brookside manufactures their own food products and ships direct so they can claim to be one of the freshest confectionery retail items. With this approach, they’ve been able to crack into foreign markets with a solid Canadian-made product. Denis McGuire, co-owner of the company comments. “Very early we saw the need to develop a processed food ingredient and healthy real fruit piece for snacking that would be of Canadian origin. It allowed us to buy Canadian and avoid some of the importing challenges.”

Brookside’s first claim to fame is the delicious Chocolate Bowl. A top-selling confection boasting the #1 ranking in the bagged chocolate fruit and nut category. Their most recent product, which took five years to develop from concept to development, is called X-Treme Fruit – an all-natural dried fruit that can be eaten alone or used as an ingredient in other foods. “We wanted to make a unique fruit product sourcing as much Canadian grown fruit as possible. The objective was that it would taste great but also have health benefits of no preservatives, no added colour or artificial flavour,” comments McGuire.

X-Treme Fruit is being sold grocery stores in the USA only at this time.
